How to stop a cat from scratching....?

My cat loves water, she baths, so water does not work. If I give her a smack on the butt she likes it, purrs and comes back for more, I tried spraying hair spray in things thinking the smell would make her sick, she started licking it....her nails will be coming out in a few months but what can I do until then??? Also she is actually autistic, she she doesnt quite get it!!!

Tips:

Cats scratch to show visibly that this is their territory. So, things like couches and chairs in the middle of the room, which are very visible are favorite targets. Cats also scratch things that "feel good."

A tip that worked for me is to take clear tape and put it on sides of couches or whatever. They don't like the feel, so they won't scratch it.

Placement of scratching posts are essential. If they are shoved in a corner they most likely won't be used because they aren't visible enough for the cat to show its markings. I would say at least one scratching post for every level of the home as well.

I know we humans can't understand this.....it is the way of the cat. Something that is born in them that can't be taken out...

Cats should be taught (without hitting) what to scratch as young as possible.

I highly advise against declawng.

This process involves cutting the knuckles (bone) of the cat off...not just the nail. It is very painful...I took care of the cats and kittens after declawing surgery....good thing owners don't see it. It can get very bloody...it made me physically ill once there was so much blood in the cage...and it was just a kitten. Yuck.

Nail caps called soft paws work for many people and is a nice alternative to declawing. It does require maitenance on the owners part as the caps need to be replaced once a month.

Here is a nice website with some great info!

I hope this info was helpful...

get her a scratching post...that is what they are for...and if you train her correctly - she will use it and not your furniture.

good luck :)

They have sprays that are supposed to help but I have never tried them. Make sure she has a scratching post. My cat that is declawed still tries to scratch on his. It is natural for them to want to scratch to sharpen their claws so they can "make kills" even if it is just a toy mouse.

This was a miracle for me. Cats are very territorial. We bought our cat a small piece of carpet of his very own. We got it from Petco for $5 and it was no bigger than a piece of paper. He instantly claimed it at his own and loved scratching it even though it moved all over when he did. If he scratched anything else we bopped him on the head and moved him to his piece of carpet. He got the hint real quick. Never had a problem again.

I take my cat to the scratching post when I see him scratching something he shouldn't be. And I take his front paws and mimic what he should do to the post. The first few times I gave him a treat after using the post. Now he loves his scratching post. Also I put the post close to what he likes to scratch. If she likes the corner of the couch, put it there.

I tried everything, and the only thing that worked for me is the scratching post. AKA: Kitty Condo . The cats love to play on it, and scratch the base.

Try covering the item she is scratching with aluminum foil. I know a couple people this has worked for. My aunts cat was scratching one area of the sofa so she taped foil on it and the cat stopped. Seems it didn't like the sound or feel of the foil. Also, try introducing a scratching post. When the cat scatches something it shouldn't tell it no and bring it to the scratching post. Cats need something to scratch since it helps to shed the dead cells off the nails.

Maybe put those soft paws on the cat and put aluminum foil on the furniture, or put that white runner stuff on the furniture with the bumpy part sticking up and get a scratching post and spray cat nip on it
