Hairspray on a sketch?

how do I apply hair spray to a sketch to seal it? do I spray directly onto the sketch....sponge it.....? how much should I spray? also, how do I keep it so it dries to be flat and not buckle?

Better to get a spray fixative from an art supply. If you do use hairspray, stand back and spray lightly and evenly. This will help fix the medium, but it can still be smudged if not careful.

Several light sprays, and let it dry in between each, should do it.

spray a light coat just enough to thouroughly wet the surface and let it dry it works especially well on charcoal drawings.

You want to hold it a good distance away from the drawing spraying only a light dusting of hair spray using smooth fluid motion. The key to getting it to "not buckle" is getting even coverage. Hair spray works ok, but it may build up in certain areas or spatter. Even though it costs more i use Sprayable Fixatif. It tends to work a little better with more even coverage and less buckling. You can find it at most art stores

Keep the hairspray (aerosol works best) about a foot away from the paper and don't concentrate heavily on one area of the drawing. Light, quick and evenly distribute. If you can t get fixitive hairspray will work. (and smell nice too)

Not only is hairspray sticky and messy to use, it will also 'yellow' with time. Instead, use a proper fixative for Drawings; which you can get at any art supply store.

In fact, there is one called: Fixatif; .... good luck.
